Imagination will be the death of me

I just want to thank everyone for all your encouragement on my last post. I was totally freaking out and yet again, you guys amaze me with how supportive and understanding you are. It wasn't as bad as I feared - my interviewers were very kind and the interview was much more like a conversation than an interview. And conversations...I'm good at those. I'll know the results by March 15th, and I'll obviously let you know (and reveal what this whole thing was about!).

I honestly think I'd be bored all the time without my imagination. But sometimes, I wish it wasn't so hyperactive. Especially on nights like last night.

Picture it:

You're home alone, trying to write an essay. You're dog starts barking and growling like he's been possessed. It startles you so badly you knock your laptop to the floor. You tell your dog to cut it out but he's staring out the slightly open window, hackles raised.

There's something out there. It's just a cat or a squirrel, you tell yourself. But your heart still beats too fast. Then there's a flash of light followed by the rolling boom of thunder. The lights in your living room flicker, briefly plunging you into darkness.

You know what this all means. You've seen enough TV, read enough books. It means there's a demonic spirit or ghost and you're going to die......

Every creak and shadow in my house had me gritting my teeth and picturing my own murder. Needless to say, I didn't get any sleep.

I wouldn't trade my imagination for anything but boy, sometimes I wish I could turn it off.

Does your imagination ever get away from you?

  1. LOL! THat sounds exactly like me. My imagination is killer. After watching the sixth sense, I couldn't drive down a winding road at night without thinking a lady in white was gonna pop up in front of the headlights or I was gonna see an old woman smoking a cigarette in my back seat.

  2. I know I've already said it but I'll say it again. YAY! You made it through the interview with flying colors!
Um, have you met me? Not like face to face cause duh, but I mean..this answer should be obvious. Yes, my imagination runs a tad wild and taming it is near impossible. Although I strip it from my writing, I think. I don't know. It's kind of like a war in my head constantly. The "artist" doodle should sum it up. ;)
    Have a superfantasticawesomefun weekend!

  3. OMG. I thought I was only person this type of thing happened too. Our flat is a house buit in the late 1800s and all the floor boards creek and our bedroom is a lot colder than the other rooms. Like you, all sorts of ideas go through my head!

I'm intrigued to learn what the interview was about!

  4. In the middle of the night it runs rampant if I wake up. That's why I keep the ninja swords handy!

  5. Yup. And it never seems to run to good things. It's not a kindly fairy leaving presents at my door, it's a serial killer coming to hack my head off. LOL, probably a good thing I don't write children's stories.

  6. Ha! that was funny. I do the exact same thing. Sometimes I keep myself awake with my imagination.

  7. Ugh, I hate when I freak myself out! Somehow every creak becomes an axe murderer :)

  8. Hurray for the interview going well! Hahaha! I so have those nights! No matter what you tell yourself, it doesn't stop the imagination. And the only way I can get to sleep during those freak outs is just passing out of exhaustion lol

  9. Most definitely! Especially in the early morning dark of the witching hour, when no one should be waking up, but I have to.

    I hate it.

And I fear I missed your earlier post, but I wish you the best of luck!

  10. My imagination gets away from me All. The. Time. I wouldn't have it any other way, but that's why I stay away from horror books and movies!

  12. OMG, that's so freaky! I totally psych myself out all the time. Like I'll watch a ghost hunting show or read a book (nothing overly scary), and I'll be fine when I'm watching. But you get later into the night and I start imagining things and freaking myself out!

Also, salt and iron are your friends when it comes to the supernatural. Me? I keep a sword by my desk. :P

  13. All the time. Not as badly as yours though.. Yours is on constant overload! :)

Well I hope you didn't die last night haha! xoxo

  14. Ha ha. Yes, but sadly, it's usually over-protective-mommy-freak imagining the worst when my kids are off somewhere.

  15. Don't you love being a writer!!? A tiny little creak in the floorboards can set our imaginations racing! I think writers are the best liars too. We make up stories for a living. He he. Great post!
Oh, and I'm NOT an interview person. I freak out, almost throw up, and have to take baby steps until I'm in the room with the person. Then I have to focus on not peeing my pants! LOL Can't wait to hear about the interview and what it was for! :D

  16. All the fricken' time! I even have an "escape" plan for me and my baby boy. Hubby does the eye roll thing when I tell him about it! *sigh*

  17. FYI I totally don't almost pee my pants. See? I am a writer, hence the lie. ;)

  18. Lol. I'm the same. If I'm alone and hear a floorboard creek it MUST be because someone has broken in. Here is to our imaginations!

  20. Is it wrong of me to totally laugh my butt off at your scary story? I mean, you didn't die, so it's funny, right? (please don't hate me now!)

And congrats on the successful interview! Can't wait to read all about it!

  21. All. The. Time. Watching Pultergiest as a child wasn't the best thing for my imagination!

I'm so glad your interviews went well. I can't wait to hear the results!

  22. I used to be more scared. Maybe it's middle age mellowing me, but dark bedrooms used to scare me. I imagined all sorts of bad creatures under the bed!

  23. Imagination running amuk? Ummm, how about when in a plane thousands of feet in the air and turbulance rocks the whole thing? I try not to imagine the worst!

Congratulations of a good interview. Hope you get great news :-)

  24. Oh my gosh, totally! I always go into these depressing worst case scenarios. I'm not a negative person or anything, but like you said, it's freaking imagination. I guess it's the whole overactive writer brain thing.

  25. Glad to hear the interview went well - best of luck!
I suffer from an overactive imagination too - when the army are on the street outside the banks guarding the trucks delivering money, I can't be on the same side of the street as them. I'm always convinced on of their guns will go off by accident! Sometimes I have to go into a shop and wait until their gone - even the other side of the street isn't far enough away!

  26. Alex's comment sounded SO like my husband!

Glad the interview went well. And as for imagination, mine does stuff like that to me, too. I guess it's one of those good curses...?

  27. LOL my imagination totally gets the best of me. Holy cow, you're in good company:)

  28. You're too cute. Sorry I didn't get a chance to read this Friday ;p Hope you got some sleep last night after the things Jennie was saying ;p Silly Jennie!

  29. My imagination totally gets the best of me when you are home alone. Especially on a web came with your back to the door where you can't see the small child in the white nightgown soaked in blood holding the butcher knife that crawled in through your basement window...Mwahahahahaha. You are staying at your grandparents now, right? Because I'm going to feel really, really (seriously) bad if you decided not to and I just posted that. You can get me back when Erik leaves me for a weekend next month.

Fingers crossed for the results on March 15th! :-) I'll bet they loved you as much as we did and you're going to get it!

  30. My imagination runs away from me all the time. Especially when dealing with shadows. My mind manipulates them into all kinds of things and watch them move all the time. They can be very distracting.
