It's the little things

When your having one of those days, the kind where you just don't know how you're going to make it through.

Opening your messages to something like this, hits you just the right way. You can feel your stress evaporating because no matter how bad your day was going, someone gives a crap. They're there, even  when they didn't know you needed them. And that's special.

I've had enough superficial and fair-weather friends to know that finding true, real friends is rare. Take in the odds of how big the world is and you could never find anyone whose going to stick with you no matter what. Who understands you and your dreams, who you can both laugh and be vulnerable with, who is unfailingly encouraging and supportive.

I owe blogger a lot because it made the world a small enough place for me to find a person like that.

This post is dedicated to Erica Mitchell-Spickard for being the kind of friend I've always needed. And the twin I always wanted. Applebee's won't know what hit em! I hope this post makes your day as much as you made mine on Monday.

And seriously you guys, you need to check out Erica's blog. She's doing this awesome series on her writing journey and the things she's learned along the way. You'll find yourself relating, laughing and cringing, all at the same time. Plus, it's illustrated so there's fun pictures like this:

What has blogger done for you?

If there's someone in your life whose awesome, and makes this journey easier and better, tell them. You never know, you could be turning a bad day into a good one.

  1. Unfortunately in our society the term friend is thrown around way too easily. This inevitably means that when these 'friends' hurt you it makes it worse, but they were never true friends in the first place. A friendship takes a long time to cultivate and needs patience, care, and careful management.

To answer your question on what Blogger has done for me would be to meet great fellow writers and the ability to cheer and applaud other writers as we negotiate the crazy path to publication together :)

  2. How sweet of her to send you that that email. Sure beats a run-of-the mill rejection letter. Seriously, you're so blessed.

  3. Blogger keeps me sane. I can always find someone whose post will cheer me up, commiserate with me when I'm down, provide a little knowledge or encouragement when I need it, or just let me hang with other writers.

Erica sounds like a great friend. I'm glad she sent you that note and cheered you up (even if she didn't realize how much you needed it). =o)

  4. Aww, I know what you mean!

Yes, blogger has introduced me to a few people I'm really thankful to have in my life now. One in particular who lives in my general area and I now have a writing BFF, which I didn't get to have before. :D

Excuse me while I go follow Erica's blog now.

  5. About 75% of the querying process simply sucks. But between the actual joy of writing, and then the added joy of blogging and making friends who 'get it'- the 25% of good times makes it worth while.

  6. Blogger introduced to my best friend Steph last year - and I still find it hard to believe we hit it off so well. It's an amazing thing.

  7. *Fanning self* (partly fever but mostly because your just too sweet for words).
I think it's obvious what Blogger has done for me. It has given me the joy of meeting new people, and also finding out that my birth record might be wrong and I have twin..ehem. ALSO, it brought me you and that alone would have been worth every blog I put up.
I'm so glad the doodle of our soon to be Applebees/Disney/HP world doodle brightened your day. You ALWAYS brighten mine and I'm always here for you no matter what, woman!
I heart you a lot, like Costco size big. (Or Sams Club I have no idea what Vancouver has, except Dean. Stalker alert.)
Thank you for the plug, and for the get well wishes. I'm getting there, the worst of it was yesterday but you m'dear brightened it when I opened my email from you. HUGE HUGS!!!! Now, lets go conquer the world as originally planned. You are my Entourage. And you are the Sam to my Dean. (I get to be Dean) Gush, gush, gush. Loves you!

  8. I remember reading years ago an analogy about relationships- they are like bank accounts. If you make more withdrawals than deposits you will end up bankrupt. I will add the concept of the 8th wonder of the world- compound interest. If there is a positive balance, it will grow on itself positively and get infinitely better. If there is a negative balance(as in credit cards) it will negatively grow and get worse.
Thank you Erica- your picture brightened my day as well. ;)

  27. Isn't this blogosphere PERFECT for we writer personalities to find those perfectly matched friendships? I've made real friendships with dozens (out of the hundreds I've met) but yeah... there are a couple I know will be lifetime, through-thick-and-through-thin friends. Pretty amazing. I'm glad you've found Erica! (she is pretty great!--in fact it's possible I found YOU through her...)

  28. Dude, you're a winner! Come by the old blog to claim your prizzle, fo shizzle.

  29. You are so right. Friends like that are true gems and just as rare. Hang on to her! Blogging has helped the world feel a lot smaller for sure. Writing can feel so solitary, and it's made it feel a little less so. Will be sure to check out Erica's blog!

  30. I took an online class and met a few really wonderful folks who have really made an impact on me.

But Blogger opened up my world. I had no idea there was such a supportive and cool bunch of writers out here conversing. I've met so many talented and supportive folks it's hard to quantify in words.

  31. Awwww! I love her drawings. But this drawing depicting the two of you, is priceless. You in your HP attire is perfection. *huggles*

Yeah, I've made many friends through blogging, many of whom I've met in person or talk on the phone with frequently.

I really don't know how writers survived before the internet. Between the fellowship and the research access, dude, how spoiled are we?

    Have a wonderful weekend, Melissa!
    Hugs,
    Lola
